Someone was lying on their back in the dark, long before anyone wrote anything down, watching the same lights cross the same sky and noticing they came back. That the sky in autumn was not the sky in spring. That certain stars rose just before the harvest, every year, without fail.
Astronomy, agriculture and religion were a single activity then, and they had to be. You watched the sky because your survival depended on knowing what came next.

The twelve signs are what remains of that watching. A calendar drawn in stars, by people who could not afford to be wrong about the seasons.
September belongs to Virgo, and she is not the figure the shorthand suggests. She is not a fussy perfectionist with a label maker. She is the harvest, and every version of her across the ancient world holds grain in her hand.

Demeter is the one most people meet first. Her daughter was taken and she went looking, and while she looked, nothing grew. Not as punishment. She simply stopped attending to the world, and the world stopped. That is the story the Greeks told about why winter exists, and it is worth sitting with, because it says the fertility of the earth depends on the mood of a grieving mother. When Persephone comes back, the grain comes back with her. Every September since has been a version of that return, counted out in sacks and jars.

Then Astraea, who is the same constellation and a different woman entirely. Justice herself, and the last of the immortals to stay on earth. The others left when people turned cruel, but she stayed, walking among us, hoping. She left last and she left reluctantly, and the Greeks put her in the sky where she still stands, holding the scales, which sit just beside her as Libra. That is Virgo's neighbor and it is not an accident. Weighing follows gathering.

So her sign arrives when the work of the year is gathered in and counted. What was planted is now weighed. That is Virgo. Not neatness but reckoning, and underneath the reckoning, grief and hope in equal measure.

Twelve segments, each sign given twice, once as glyph and once as image. At the center a sun throws its rays out to every division, which is the whole idea of the thing in miniature.
It is old geometry. A circle divided into twelve, everything arranged in relation to what sits in the middle.

Look at the wheel and find Virgo, then look straight across. The two fish are there. Pisces, swimming in opposite directions, tied together at the tail. Every sign faces its opposite across the circle, and the pair is never an accident. Virgo counts, sorts, names and weighs. Pisces dissolves all of it. What Virgo separates into categories, Pisces returns to water.
Which is why the full moon of Virgo season lands in Pisces and most practitioners already know in their bodies.

That is what this bowl is. A thread running from people watching the sky in the dark, through the Greeks who gave those lights names and temperaments, through every astrologer since who has drawn a circle and divided it by twelve, to you, sitting with an instrument in front of you in September while the year turns toward its harvest.

The size often defines how deep or high a sound is. Taller bowls most of the time have a longer lasting deeper sound, the smaller a bowl the higher and more uplifting the sound.

You know best what you are looking for. If this is your first bowl we recommend that you take a middle sized bowl (7″–9″).

If you already have one bowl or a set of bowls it is completely up to you what you feel will support and soothe you the most.

If you already have an alchemy bowl or are looking for a special note, you can read our little note guide or simply ask us for advice. The notes work in accordance with the chakras:

  • B — 7th · Sahasrara (Crown) — Pineal Gland — Spirituality, Knowing
  • A & A# — 6th · Ajna (Third Eye) — Pituitary Gland — Awareness, Intuition
  • G & G# — 5th · Vishuddha (Throat) — Thyroid Gland — Communication
  • F & F# — 4th · Anahata (Heart) — Thymus Gland — Love, Healing
  • E — 3rd · Manipura (Solar Plexus) — Pancreas — Wisdom, Power
  • D & D# — 2nd · Svadhishthana (Sacral) — Adrenal Glands — Sexuality, Creativity
  • C & C# — 1st · Muladhara (Root) — Ovaries, Testes — Basic Trust, Tribe

If you already have a bowl or a set of bowls, we recommend choosing bowls that are harmonious with the ones you already have. This typically means combining either plus notes together or minus notes together.
